# Survival

Hunger, thirst, cold, and untreated wounds are what kill you when the dead do not.

You have 100 health. It does not come back from waiting, eating, or resting.

## Hunger and thirst

Both bars drain the whole time you are in the county. Hunger falls by about half a point a minute, so a full stomach lasts a little over three hours. Thirst falls about twice as fast: a little under two hours from full. You wake up short on both.

At zero, that bar costs about 5 health every 5 seconds. Both empty at once is about 10. One empty bar kills a healthy survivor in under two minutes.

Cold makes you hungrier. Heat makes you thirstier. Standing beside a lit fire cuts both drains in half. Recovery skill slows hunger a little. See [Skills](/deadtiles-docs/the-county/skills.md).

Drink the bottles you find. Sinks sometimes still have water in them. Cook raw meat before you eat it. Eating it raw infects you about half the time. On a lit fireplace a piece cooks in about a minute. Leave it another minute and it burns.

Both bars run from 0 to 100. The amounts below are the base. Cooking skill raises them, up to about a fifth, and that includes thirst you lose from salty food and burnt meat.

## Health

Open your pack, select the item, and use it. You can walk while it works. Sprinting interrupts it.

| Treatment | What you get |
| ----------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Rags | 5 health, in about 5 seconds |
| Bandage | 20 health, in about 10 seconds |
| Isopropyl alcohol | 25 health, in about 5 seconds |
| Multivitamins | A bottle of 10 doses. Each dose feeds and waters you a little, then restores 1 health every 10 seconds for 5 minutes (30 health). Another dose starts those five minutes over. It does not add on. |
| Beside a lit fire | 1 health every 10 seconds, for as long as you stay there |

A lit fireplace or a lit furnace both count, and you have to be on it or on a tile next to it. Step away and the timer starts over. The fire still warms the air from farther off: a few tiles outside, and farther indoors.

Medicine skill makes rags, bandages, and alcohol heal more, up to about a fifth. Recovery makes the slow heals from vitamins and fires stronger, up to about half again.

Infection lowers your maximum health, and a bandage cannot fill what the infection has taken off the top. See [Infection](/deadtiles-docs/stay-alive/infection.md).

Doctor Clark at Birchport Hospital fully heals you and clears an infection for 50 banknotes.

At a workbench, a shirt or a teddy becomes rags. One bottle of alcohol and six rags become two bandages.

## Temperature

Your core follows the weather. Open air, night, rain, and wet clothes pull it down. Dry layers and a lit fire pull it back. Wear clothes. Bare skin gets cold in air that a shirt would handle.

Below 35°C is hypothermia. Above 39°C is heatstroke. Either one damages you at the same pace as an empty stomach: about 5 health every 5 seconds.

Rain soaks your clothes in a few minutes, and wet clothes keep about a quarter of their warmth. Dry them beside a fire or indoors, or take the wet layer off. Snow soaks you more slowly. Fog only dampens you.

Sprinting and heavy clothes build heat. Slow down, shed a layer, or get indoors.

A fireplace holds 8 logs. Each one burns about 10 minutes. Chop trees with a hatchet for the wood, and light the fire with a lighter. You can build a fireplace in Birchport. Almost nothing else is allowed there. See [Building](/deadtiles-docs/the-county/building.md).

## Stamina

Sprinting drains stamina. A full bar is about 50 seconds of sprint. When it hits empty, nothing comes back for 10 seconds, then it refills. Fitness raises the bar, up to about twice as long. Do not get caught sprinting with walkers behind you.

## Night

Walkers speed up after dark, fastest around the middle of the night, and ease off by dawn. You see less. Light a fireplace or get indoors.
